Services
Theme-based instruction is an effective and meaningful way to support students in autism-specific classrooms. By organizing instruction around a common theme, teachers can provide repeated exposure to vocabulary, concepts, and skills across the school day. This approach increases predictability, reduces cognitive load, and supports comprehension while keeping learning engaging and purposeful. This workshop will explore how theme-based units can be implemented to meet diverse student needs.
Implementation:
Participants will be guided through practical steps for implementing theme-based units in an autism classroom:
Sample Units:
Participants will review a sample theme-based unit (e.g., The Solar System or Community Helpers). The sample will illustrate how a theme can be expanded or scaled depending on instructional time, student engagement, and prior knowledge, while still ensuring meaningful learning throughout the day.
Outcome:
By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with practical strategies, planning tools, and a clear understanding of how theme-based units can increase engagement, support comprehension, and provide structured, meaningful learning experiences in autism-specific classrooms.
